5. Vast - Activities

People have Values in relation to Activities:

Actors: The participants are students of the education faculty. I have already described earlier the full complement of actors, but you can define the bulk as being pre or post service student teachers. Moreover, each group is either at degree or post-level study and therefore have no relationship or class crossover.  The degree students also have greater opportunity to complete classroom tasks in groups, and therefore construct both professional and friendship networks. In the post stream with many students external, some do not even get to use the learning space, and only communicate to one another via virtual tools.

Room-Timetable
Actions: The learning space provides a layout structure that groups can be formed, and at the same time provide each member of the group with their own set of digital tools. As for priority activities, the learning space has posted a designated times for subject units to control the room, and exclude others from entering.

Material: The main use of the learning space is to provide computer and internet access to education students. But it could also be a place to relax and cool down especially in the hotter summer months. External noise is not an issue as the room has closed windows and good sound dampening characteristics, which allows the learner to concentrate on their tasks, without undue external interference.

Information Support: No signage, except outside the entrance door to tell you when the learning space is needed by a lecturer. The wall are barren from any signage or forms of stimulation. Each table has its own computer, but if you need help, and not part of a group, then you have no choice but to leave the space to seek help.

Conditions: As I discuss later, there are issues in which natural light is mismanaged in filling the learning space. Your position in the space can be distracted by the uneven radiant of the sun. Therefore, this can create conflict. You may want the blinds drawn, but the fluro-lights can flicker; while others draw strength from the Vitamin D of the sun.

Relative Dimensions: The two center tables structures are for groups. A design to cater for 3 groups of  3 people. Any bigger groups then members of the group would need to be cast-aside. which would disturb group harmony.

Navigating-the-Space

Risk & Responsibilities: As the windows are fixed closed, therefore the operation of the air-conditioner is important to maintain comfort. But as the air conditioner has no temperature controls then all users of the space have to accept what seasonal conditions, the air-con brings. The layout of
the center tables requires the lab users to navigate around objects. This could be a problem for someone with a mobility issues, as the printer is located on the far wall and therefore, they would have a need to cross the floor and barriers.
